Ocean County Honors Its Fallen Heroes

Ocean County law enforcement officials and officers gather to remember those lost in the line of duty in the last year

There are 12 names etched in the monuments at Ocean County Park in Lakewood. It's a list that grew longer in the last year, as more law enforcement families joined those whose family members made the ultimate sacrifice in giving their lives in the line of duty. During the annual Law Enforcement Memorial Day Service, on the grounds at the Ocean County Police Academy within the park, those officers were remembered again, as the county's entire law enforcement family paused to honor their sacrifices. "I've always believed that we are one large law enforcement family," said Juan Mattos Jr., U.S. Marshal for the District of New Jersey, who was the keynote speaker at the service. "When one of us bleeds, we all bleed." "Remembrance is the …

GALLERY: Beautifying Downtown Barnegat

Members of the National Junior Honor Society at the Russell O. Brackman Middle School worked enthusiastically on fixing up the gazebo and the Cox House well into the afternoon.

Members of the National Junior Honor Society chose to reach beyond the walls of the Russell O. Brackman Middle School and help beautify the rest of the town. According to Robin Urso, co-advisor of the NJHS, the students were given the option to re-plant around the flagpole at their own school or work on enhancing the historic Cox House and the gazebo. The students overwhelmingly agreed to help out downtown, Urso said, with volunteers Morgan Ridgway and Nick Pace spearheading the project. Jessica Hochrun, member of the NJHS, said they chose this project "so [the downtown] won't look as run down, and hopefully bring more tourists in the summertime." Kyle Gorman and Reese Hardy began by sweeping up the sidewalks and raking up the leaves …

Barnegat Farmer On A Quest To Feed The Town With Heirloom Vegetables

Caitlin Clarke pushing for inclusion in the farmers' market; Chamber says there's enough vegetable vendors already

Raised by an Italian mother, Caitlin Clarke of Barnegat said food has always been important in her family. "What an admirable endeavor it is to try and feed people," Clarke said. She studied zoology, then switched to an interest in plants at a small Pennsylvania college in an agrarian area. She ended up majoring in Japanese, but fell in love with orchards and the idea of growing things, she said. Today Clarke, 25, is seeking to fulfill this mission by growing heirloom vegetables out of the Bay Avenue home where she grew up, an 1872 historical residence across from the Memorial Park with a 1-acre property. In 2010, Clarke started planting tomatoes, beans, lettuce, eggplants, peas and more. Clarke plans to take orders through Facebook, phone…

Barnegat Man Charged With Stealing Motorcycle

The $4,000 property was stolen outside Genuardi's this winter, and recovered last week, police said.

Barnegat police say a local man stole a motorcycle this winter from outside the Genuardi's parking lot. Michael Connolly, 27, of Barnegat, was charged on May 10 with third degree theft and fourth degree criminal mischief for committing a theft of a motorcycle, which police say is valued at $4,000. The theft occurred sometime between Feb. 4 and 5, 2012, outside the Genuardi's parking lot, police said. Detective William Hetrick conducted the investigation. Connelly was already a suspect in the case when Little Egg Harbor Police  found him in possession of the motorcycle while arresting him on unrelated drug charges. Connelly was processed and released, pending a court date.

Finally, we will have a gallery and a story about a group of Barnegat students cleaning up downtown today from photographer and writer Jacquelyn Alvarez, who has just graduated from Rutgers University with a journalism degree. EVENTS AND REMINDERS: American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life" will take place tonight outside the …

Fishing Friday

Finally Time for Fluke!

Mild temperatures send anglers into action

There's no doubt I'm a bit late to the party this year. History holds that my boat is often one of the first in the marina and, almost always, the last boat to be hauled out. Jingle Bell Rock has played from the speakers mounted in my center console. But this year, my fishing season has yet to begin. I have a tentative appointment with my boat hauler in Barnegat to drop her in the water Monday, but that's after a spring where some busy work weeks here at Patch and marathon rounds of graduate school studying have pushed fishing to the back burner. Luckily, with formal graduation ceremonies at Monmouth University now complete, I'll continue a much more elusive educational endeavour: finding every last honey hole in Barnegat Bay! With the …

During the week prior, a teen, acting with two younger boys, broke into a shed behind the Lillian M. Dunfee School and stole balls used for recreation, police said. Below are the details released by the Barnegat Police Department: On May 9, Detective William Hetrick charged a 14-year-old Barnegat female and 9-year-old Barnegat male with fourth degree theft in connection with the theft of electrical wire from the back yard of a Longboat Avenue residence. Oh relax Cindy - I certainly would NEVER mean to say that kids get a "get out of jail free" card because they are bored - I myself have had to call in the Barnegat PD to temper some children in my brand new neighborhood, something I'm sure not everyone has the guts to do anyway. But I do agree that everything starts with parents - they need to actually be parents (now that is a horror!) - but I …   more ›

A 9-Year-Old Wrestling Champ Following In His Dad's Footsteps

Dean Peterson of Barnegat, a recent All-Star Team champ, had dreamt of football, but is settling on wrestling as a "safer" sport.

When he was younger, Anthony Peterson, 47, of Barnegat, played football and wrestled, but his athletic career came to an end with a serious injury in high school. "I busted my whole arm open, and I did it playing football," said Peterson, giving his 9-year-old son a look. Peterson's son, Dean Peterson, the middle child of four, had been dreaming about playing football, even while having a great time rolling around on the wrestling mats. "I wanted to follow in my dad's footsteps," he said. "Mostly, I like to win. I like to pin kids on the mat." Dean, a bright and articulate child who answers questions with a frankness and ease of a young kid, but with an intelligence of someone much older, started wrestling when he was 6. "My first match, I…
