Lt. Governor upholds administrative law judge's recommendation
A challenge from two men from Toms River and Wall seeking to remove President Obama's name from New Jersey's upcoming primary ballot has failed. Mario Apuzzo, the attorney representing New Jersey residents Nick Purpura and Ted Moran, said Deputy Director and Administrative Law Judge Jeff Masin recommened against the ballot challenge following a more than three-hour hearing earlier this week. Lt. Gov. and Secretary of State Kim Guadagno upheld the decision earlier this week. The decision, delivered to Apuzzo via email, was not based on the issues presented in the challenge, namely that Obama is not a natural born citizen of the United States and that a birth certificate released by the White House last April is fraudulent, but rather on a …

Government transparency and attracting ratables some of the issues to be raised in the election
Mayor Al Cirulli and Township Committeeman Jeff Melchiondo will face opposition from two newcomers in this fall's election. Democrats Elaine Taylor, 53 and Susan Conway, 40, will run together on the platform of bringing more openness to the township government and attracting more ratables to Barnegat, among other issues. "Our slogan is progress not politics," said Taylor, the stay-at-home mother of two who lived in Barnegat since 1990 and has served for five years on the school board. "If I’m elected, the first thing I’d like to do is make everything more open. We have a beautiful web page that doesn’t get utilized as fully as it should. Also, we’ve got to find a way to make our town more attractive to some of those major businesses that …
Democrat challenging longtime Sheriff William L. Polhemus in race for three-year term.
The Democratic candidate running for Ocean County sheriff this year says issues, not age, will be the focus of his campaign. George "Bob" Armstrong, 68, is challenging 83-year-old William L. Polhemus for the three-year sheriff's term in November. He unveiled his platform on the steps of the Ocean County Courthouse Monday afternoon. He doesn't plan to make an issue out of Polhemus' age. "That's up to the voters to decide," Armstrong said in an interview this morning. "Even if he was only 60 years old, it's been way too long," he added. "It's just outrageous for one person to be there for 27 years." Armstrong said his 40-year career in law enforcement will benefit the Sheriff's Department and the residents of Ocean County. He has served as a…

Republican organization picks incumbents Little and Bartlett to run for re-election to freeholder board
One more time. Eighty-three-year-old longtime Ocean County Sheriff William L. Polhemus wanted to run for another term and the Ocean County Republican Organization granted his wish last week. "The sheriff to my knowledge has been running a good operation over there," Ocean County Republican Chairman George R. Gilmore said today. "The sheriff has said that he wants to run." When asked if he thought Polhemus was up to another term, Gilmore replied "I see no impediment to his running and winning." Polhemus has served as Ocean County Sheriff since 1985. Prior to that, he was police chief of the Seaside Heights Police Department and served 35 years in the department. He will be challenged by Democrat George "Bob" Armstrong, 68, whose career in …

Widow of John Adler says from Brick press conference that she's running on similar issues of her late husband
From the home of a supporter in the Seaview Village adult community in Brick, and with her 10-year-old son Oliver by her side, Shelley Adler announced her run for Congress Tuesday. Adler, the widow of former Democratic Congressman John Adler, faces a contest with incumbent Republican Jon Runyan, and says she wants to be a champion of middle class issues. She hopes to pick up where her husband left off, she said, and Tuesday afternoon mentioned a study in John Adler's name that addresses veterans' issues. "Since John’s passing, I’ve worked to establish a national fund in John’s name to study what we can do on a federal level to improve veteran benefits and better integrate them back into civilian life. I’ll take the results of this study …

Tuesday, February 28
The move from an April school board election to a November one means new deadlines to run as a candidate. Now, candidates have until June 5 to file a petition to run in November, said the county clerk's office. Today was the deadline under the April system. Nearly every school district in Ocean County, including Barnegat's, decided to move its school board election to November. Lakewood is one of the few holdouts that will still have an April eleciton. The shift also means the Barnegat Township school budget will no longer be before voters, and will instead be decided by the school board this spring, unless the school budget grows more than 2 percent. Only if the school district presents a budget more than the 2 percent cap will it be …

Adler would run against Jon Runyan in newly redrawn 3rd District
Shelley Adler, widow of former Democratic U.S. Rep. John Adler, announced today that she will run against Republican incumbent Jon Runyan for New Jersey's 3rd District Congressional seat. “For several months, I weighed running for the seat formerly held by my late husband to continue his legacy of public service," said Adler in a statement run in several news outlets across the state. "When I speak to people, they share their struggles with me and are frustrated by politicians playing games in Washington. They want a new direction. “In Congress, I will fight to create new jobs and to restore accountability by rooting out wasteful spending. I will also push for tax incentives to help small businesses create jobs in new industries, to …
Barnegat and other districts that chose to move elections to November will see more county oversight of school vote
The New Jersey Department of Education has issued more details about the new rules allowing school districts to shift their board elections to November – a move the Barnegat Board of Education has already approved. The DOE offered answers to frequently asked questions regarding the new law, which allows districts that move their elections to forgo a budget referendum. The Barnegat Board of Education voted to move its annual election to line up with the general election in November last month, as did many other districts in Ocean County and across the state.
