Drivers were extricated, transported to Southern Ocean Medical Center
Two victims of a motor vehicle accident were injured and transported to the hospital after nearly colliding head-on around 3:15 a.m. on Sunday on Barnegat Boulevard, according to the Barnegat Township Police Department.
Police and the Barnegat Fire Company responded to the crash in the westbound lane of the roadway near the Atlantic Heights Apartments.
The first arriving fire officer on location reported one vehicle was in the median of the divided highway needing a "door pop" to remove the occupant, while the doors had to be removed from the second vehicle to free the driver, according to a media reporting service.
According to the police report of the accident, a car driver by Michael Grace, 51, of Barnegat Township, collided with a car driven by Jessica Allen, 22, also of Barnegat Township.
Grace was heading east in the westbound lane, police said.
Grace suffered bruising and non-cardiac chest pain. Allen sustained a broken arm, according to police.
Grace and Allen were taken to Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin for treatment of their injuries.
According to police, Grace was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and driving the wrong way on a divided highway, police said.
Once the victims of the accident were removed from the scene, the fire company remained on location for cleanup.
