Volunteers from the Barnegat Fire Company taught three classes of kindergarteners at the Horbelt School about fire safety in a fun, interactive presentation Wednesday afternoon.

Fire company president Gary Brown, firefighter Kevin Kadlubowski and probationary fireman Matt Lynch, a newcomer to the company, went over the basics of "stop, drop and roll" and who to call and what to do in an emergency, and let the youngsters see firsthand the kind of gear they use when they fight fires.

The kids also got to take home informational coloring books and plastic fire hats to the – materials the fire company pays for through fundraising efforts in the community.

Lynch suited up in full firefighter turnout gear, complete with oxygen tank and motion-sensing alarm, and Kadlubowski let the students handle a thermal imaging camera that lets rescuers scan for hot spots in buildings. It was, in the words of one 5-year-old "so awesome."
